Each semester the LRC hosts a series of Instructional Technology Showcases that highlight how LCS and ELTI faculty are using technology to enhance their teaching. Beginning in the Fall of 2008, we have been streaming the showcases live online.

Fall 2009 Showcase Schedule

  • Developing & Using Online Lecture Materials for Language & Literature Courses
    Tuesday, Sept. 29, 12:30-1:30 pm

Faculty Presenter: Dr. Dale Grote, Associate Professor of Classics

Video and other kinds of pre-recorded presentations can be used in many ways to supplement instruction in language & literature courses. These materials can:

  • provide additional help to students who benefit from reviewing on their own
  • reach students with different learning styles
  • address a question or issue that arises frequently or that is a common problem for students
  • be used when class is cancelled due to inclement weather or faculty travel.

Topics can be based on the subject matter of the course (for example, an animated and narrated explication of a poem or film scene by the professor) or procedural (for example, how to use an online dictionary or other language resource). The presentations can be short (5-10 minutes) or longer (1 hour).

Dr. Grote will demonstrate pre-developed materials that he publishes online for his Greek course. He will discuss how he designs his presentation, how he incorporates them into his courses, and how his students respond to them.

  • Online Workbooks for Elementary Level Language Courses

Thursday, Nov. 5, 12:30-1:30 pm

Faculty Presenters: Dr. Katherine Stephenson, Associate Professor of French, Prof. Adriana Vega-Hildalgo, Lecturer in Spanish, Dr. Concepcion Godev, Associate Professor of Spanish, Prof. Victoria Grimm, Lecturer in German

Publishers of beginning level language textbooks are increasingly making the workbook (used by students for grammar, writing, and listening practice) available as fully online books. The activities and features vary by book.  Faculty members in French, German, and Spanish will demonstrate features of the online workbook used in their courses and will discuss issues (pedagogical, administrative, technical) with implementing an online workbook.

Presenters will discuss:

  • Features and activities in the workbooks they use
  • How they incorporate the workbook activities into their course
  • Administrative issues (How to grant student access, How students purchase the books, How long students have access to the materials)
  • Handling technical questions
  • Tips for selecting and evaluating an online workbook

This showcase will be of interest to faculty already using online workbooks who may wish to see examples of other online workbooks & to discuss implementation issues and for faculty who are not using an online workbook but who are interested in learning about them.
