What can I do in the LRC?
  • Receive technical assistance with language learning materials used in your class

Where can I take the Language Placement Exam?
  • The online placement exam is administered in the Language Resource Center computer classroom (COED 434).
  • The Languages and Culture Studies Department is responsible for administering and managing the online language placement exam.  More information, including exam dates, is available here.
What other language study resources are available?
  • Facebook Groups for Elementary Language Courses:  Facebook groups for elementary language study are available for students in the UNC Charlotte Facebook network. The groups are intended for use by students as a way to share information about their language study, locate study groups, and ask and answer questions about language courses from fellow students. The group is meant to provide an additional means of academic support and to promote community among students in the multiple sections of elementary language courses.  Ask at the LRC Reception Desk if you have any questions.
  • Atkins Library has an extensive series of Pimsleur Audio Books for Elementary Language Instruction.  These audio books can provide a useful way to practice on your own.  Ask any librarian at Atkins Library for assistance using these audio books.
  • Each foreign language has a club for students interested in learning more about that language and cultures associated with it.  Ask any foreign language instructor for more information.

In the Fall and Spring semesters, tutors (Sponsored by Tutorial Services/Supplemental Instruction) hold drop-in tutoring hours in the LRC and are available for online tutoring. Tutoring is also available by appointment in the Center for Academic Excellence in Fretwell 330. Tutoring in additional languages may be available at the Center for Academic Excellence.

Fall 2009 LRC Tutoring Schedule (Drop-in & Online)

For each tutoring session, the tutor is available in the LRC for drop-in in-person tutoring and also available online for tutoring (see below for more information about online tutoring).

French all levels
  • M: 5:00- 7:00 pm (thru 1202)
  • T: 11 am—12 pm
  • W: 8:30 - 10:30 am (thru 1202) and 4:00 - 6:00 pm
  • F: 10 am - 12 pm
German all levels
  • M: 3:30—4:30 pm
  • T: 2—3 pm
Japanese all levels
  • F: 12 - 4 pm
Russian all levels
  • M: 2—7 pm
  • W: 2 - 4 pm
Portuguese all levels
  • T: 3:30 - 5:30 pm

Overview of Online Tutoring

 

Online tutoring is available during the Fall and Spring semesters on the same schedule as Drop-In Tutoring. It is not available during the summer.

Online tutoring is delivered via Centra, a web-conferencing tool. You will need to use a computer connected to the internet that has speakers and a microphone or a headset with a microphone. Students who wish to receive online tutoring can access it from any computer connected to the internet.

How to access online tutoring:
  • Run a short technical setup: http://centraone.uncc.edu/SysCheck/main/
    • This will ensure that your computer settings will work for the session
  • Go to: http://centraone.uncc.edu/
  • Username: student11
  • Password: centra
  • Select the "Ongoing" tab, then select "Attend" to open the Centra session window
  • Select the session named "LRC Tutoring"

Please note that only one student at a time may log in to the tutoring session. If you try to log in and the system does not allow it, try again in a few minutes. You may phone the LRC at any time to ask for help accessing online tutoring: 704-687-8768.

The LRC comprises four separate areas dedicated for students' use: 

 

LRC Reception and Course Reserve Desk(COED 434)

The Reception Desk and Course Reserve area are located at the entrance to the LRC (COED 434).  Students may ask for assistance from LRC student staff and check out materials placed on reserve for their foreign language or ESL course. 

 

LRC Classroom (COED 434)

This 50-seat computer classroom is also a public computing lab.  When it is not in use as a classroom, any UNCC student is welcome to work in there.

 

LRC Computer Classroom Software:

  • Keyboards for Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, and Russian
  • MS Office Proofing Tools (spell check, grammar check, thesaurus) for English, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish
  • Audacity: sound recording and editing software
  • French Grammar and Vocabulary Programs (Mac only): French Grammar Review I & II, French Tutor I & II, Portes Ouvertes, ELFE (Elementary French Exercises) I, II, & III
  • Japanese Hypercard Exercises (Mac only)
  • WinDVD: view Region 1 DVDs on any PC
  • Wordfast: Translation Memory engine available for Microsoft Word on PC and Mac

LRC Viewing and Listening Stations (COED 434)    

There are nine stations equipped for individual student work in the LRC (COED 434).  These stations contain Dell GX 280 PCs with headsets with microphones that can be used for accessing on-line audio and video course materials, language software, multilingual web browsing and word-processing, and more.  These work stations are divided by partitions to facilitate recording activities and individual work.  Four stations contain TV/VCR units for viewing videocassettes and two stations contain audio cassette players for listening to audio cassettes.

The listening stations are a part of the public lab of the LRC and available for use by any UNCC student for computing work, accessing on-line audio and video course materials, language software, multilingual web browsing and word-processing, and printing.

LRC International Television Viewing Area

The LRC has a large TV with access to several international channels.  The International TV Viewing Area also contains a VHS player and multi-region DVD player for students to view films for their classes.  There is a small sofa and 5 wireless headsets are available for students to use to view international programming.  The following channels are currently available:

English/Chinese:  CCTV9, Channel 265   CCTV-9, an English-language Chinese channel, offers a window into China and its culture. CCTV-9's programming mainly includes news reports, while also featuring cultural and entertainment programs. 
French:  TV5, Channel 606   TV5 offers television programs from France, Belgium, Switzerland and Quebec, Canada. TV5 offers live soccer matches directly from France, variety shows, newscasts, current affairs programs, sports and cultural entertainment, including with English subtitles as well as documentaries about French-related culture.   German:  Deutsche Welle, Channel 725   Deutsche Welle (DW-TV) is an English and German language channel broadcast from Germany. Deutsche Welle's programming covers politics, business, arts, sports, social issues, and entertainment.  From the German capital Berlin, Deutsche Welle covers current events and developments in Europe from its bureaus in Berlin, Brussels, and Moscow.  Japanese:  TV Japan, Channel 641  TV JAPAN includes broadcasts from NHK, including live news, documentaries, dramas, sports, variety shows, children's programming and other popular NHK programs. It also includes exclusive coverage of Sumo Wrestling tournaments. Russian:  RTVI, Channel 592   RTVi offers a variety of programming including seven daily newscasts from New York, Moscow, and Israel including "Now in America," "Now in the World," "Israel over the Week" and "Russian Panorama." RTVi features cultural and entertainment shows, movies, children's programming, and game and talk shows.  Russian:  RTVI+, Channel 593   Russian entertainment channel that includes children's programs, including cartoons, movies, games shows and educational television. RTVI+ also shows classic and contemporary Russian movies.  Spanish & French:  CCTV E&F, Channel 884   CCTV-E&F, produced in China, broadcasts programs in both Spanish and French in 4-hour shifts including news, features, education and entertainment programs.
